By the tender age of 15, I had already entered a toxic affair with diets hoping to be smaller-bodied, accepted, and 'in control' of what I ate. 

In the 10 years that followed, I gained and lost hundreds of pounds.

I grit my teeth through countless group weigh-ins and the crushing embarrassment that went with.

And I ‘fell off the wagon’ and into a bottomless pit of self-hatred more times than I could count. 

Every time, I resented myself and my inability to ‘just eat normal’ a little more...until I was completely drowning in shame.

Because back then (before getting the health degrees) I didn’t know that 70+ years of research had already proven dieting doesn’t work. I just thought I hadn’t found the right diet...yet.

Back then I wasn’t aware that I was playing into the hand of deeply-ingrained misogyny, capitalism, and body politics with my quest.

All I knew was that everything I tried didn’t work.

So I went searching for something more nourishing than mainstream diets.

And in 2000 I thought I’d finally found it when I discovered yoga (and wellness culture).

Now, I wish this was the part of the story where I told you that sun salutations and spirulina smoothies released me from diet culture for good…

...or that the wellness world held the key to this food and body freedom stuff.

But the reality was that the ‘wolf in wellness clothing’ led me down an even darker path...one that you might be on right now (without even knowing it).

Is wellness culture making you...unwell?

When I started my new journey, calorie counting turned to cutting out ‘toxic’ and ‘inflammatory’ foods.

Weight Watchers turned into cleanses, intermittent fasting, and fistfuls of ‘holistic’ supplements.

Instead of comparing myself to impossibly beautiful celebs, I spent hours a day in the yoga studio trying to look like the waif-thin teachers I idolized.

Oh, I finally got the ‘smaller body’ I always wanted. 

But with a heaping side of self-destructive obsession.

My preoccupation with my body and health slowly eroded my relationships, social life, and any sense of inner peace I might have had left.

Absolutely! Many of my clients come to me with some knowledge or experience with intuitive eating. But the key difference with TYF is the community and support. 

It’s one thing to read a how-to book, and another to embark on a journey 100% supported by your sisters on the same path. When you kick the isolation of diet culture to the curb, it loses its power and you start experiencing real transformation.

When diet culture convinces us that the world prioritizes thinness above all else, the idea of gaining or even maintaining our weight can be anxiety-inducing. Know that your feelings are common and valid – but that those fears can be challenged and overcome!

Any expert who tells you that they know how YOUR body is going to recover is lying to you. On your Intuitive Eating journey you might gain, lose, or simply maintain your weight. Which one will depend on where you are now and your body's biological set point.

What I do know for certain is that many of my clients come to me still hesitant and afraid to let dieting go. And what they find (and I have personally found) is that the pain and brokenness of living at war with your body is far worse than living in a larger body.

One of the biggest misconceptions about intuitive eating is that it’s a reckless ‘free pass’ to eat whatever you want while ignoring any health ‘consequences’. But the reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

The HAES framework has been proven time and time again to improve blood pressure and blood lipids long term. Meanwhile, the health benefits of intentional weight loss only stick around for 6-12 months.

And dieting can pose very real risks to your menstrual cycle, mental health, metabolism, and more. Choosing intuitive eating instead is one of the most responsible health choices you can make!

While I can’t promise a perfect body image every day of your life (let’s be real, we’re human!) — I can tell you what you can expect based on my clients’ common experiences:
